Following the signing of the toll increase resolution by the Secretary of Transportation and the passage of HB 164 by the Delaware General Assembly, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has begun work to implement the toll increases and new DMV fees.
The Transportation Secretary consults with the General Assembly on toll hikes, but has the power to raise charges.
The increases will provide the department with an estimated $107 million annually in additional revenue. Legislators have not considered a fuel tax increase for the transportation budget in decades. The state's fuel ta is the lowest in the region.
The fees include a new $110 charge for the state's 48,000 battery-electric vehicles. The fees compensates for drivers not paying the fuel tax and heavier weights of EVs that impact roads, according to DelDOT. A rough estimate points to the charge matching the amount of state fuel tax paid via a vehicle using 500 gallons of gas a year.
The fees is lower than charges in adjacent states, with New Jersey hitting drivers with a $250 bill.
Delaware also has low fees for vehicle registration and other services when compared to other states.
