Chesapeake's Ohio subsidiary, Aspire Energy Express, LLC, struck an agreement with American Electric Power (AEP) to construct and operate a natural gas pipeline in central Ohio to serve a new fuel-cell facility, which will provide on-site electric power.
The new Aspire Energy Express transmission infrastructure represents a capital investment of about $10 million. It is expected to deliver natural gas to power on-site electricity generation at the new data center in the first half of 2027.
Aspire gathers and distributes natural gas from Ohio wells for commercial and industrial customers. Chesapeake also operates natural gas pipeline systems and provides natural gas utility service on the Delmarva Peninsula and in Florida.
"This project is a clear example of how Chesapeake Utilities Corporation continues to execute on our growth strategy by leveraging our core capabilities: new business development, transmission project construction, and customer-focused energy solutions," said Jeff Sylvester, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation. "Through our work with AEP, we're deploying capital to deliver infrastructure needed to support energy demand in high-growth regions of Ohio."
AEP's Ohio business will install fuel cells at sites operated by Amazon Web Services and Cologix under an agreement with Bloom Energy.
Bloom assembles fuel cells at its Newark, DE site and is making headway in supplying electricity to data centers.
"This is a great example of how we can innovate to meet the moment," Marc Reitter, AEP Ohio president. "We're helping power the future of Ohio's economy while staying true to our core responsibility — delivering safe, reliable service to every customer we serve."
