Discarded smoking material  was blamed for a Friday night fire that caused $400,000 in damage to an apartment house on Main Street in Elkton.

Singerly Fire Co. and and adjacent fire companies responded to the fire that later became three alarms at the multi-unit building. 

It took 40 minutes to put out the initial  blaze at the  However, the fire rekindled early Saturday morning. That triggered the third alarm. There were no injuries. 

Thirteen people were displaced by the fire, with the American Red Cross responding to that need, according to Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. 

The fire comes at a time of dry conditions that have triggered a Red Flag Warning in the region.
