Pizza parlor comeback
If you are of a certain age, memories of a family trip to a pizza parlor return from time to time.
For a decade or two, Parlors, a local example being Pappy's, became a place for the family to have an affordable night out, with mom and dad getting a chance to have an adult beverage. Pitchers were OK if you got together with friends and their kids.
The decor featured Tiffany-style lamps and other Italian-style offerings, with a few arcade games if space was sufficient.
A wave of Pizza Huts, Chuck E. Cheeses, and changing dining habits led to chains retreating and disappearing. You might also remember Shakey's, which reportedly had a Delaware outpost but now has a handful of locations on the West Coast.
Pizza Hut never figured out how ways to broaden its menu and only a few sit-down locations remain. One with the signature roof remains frozen in time in Elkton, MD. Other locations became diners or were razed.
As News Journal food writer Patricia Talarico reported earlier this month, Nick Vouous and members of the Govatos family of chocolate and restaurant fame are teaming up to bring back a pizza parlor in the former Ulysses space on Marsh Road in north Wilmington.
Nick built a carryout pizza business at the family's Kozy Korner breakfast and lunch place in Wilmington, with his offerings often selling out quickly.
He opened a location in the Prices Corner area west of the city that recently closed as he focused on the parlor, which is slated to open in February.
Nick noted on his many social media updates that he plans to call for a Prices Corner food spot once the north Wilmington location is further. along
Asian spot opens at Bally's
Asian offerings are a mainstay at casino resorts nationwide. Still, it took a while for Delaware to latch on to the trend, even though competition for gamblers and those who like to chill out and play the slots settings is intense.
Bally's Dover Casino Recently opened Macau Kitchen Restaurant and Bar as part of a newly designed gaming lounge aimed at high-limit players.
The restaurant will focus on noodle dishes, including Vietnamese Pho, wok specialties, and traditional Chinese-American dishes such as General Tso's chicken, with the offering said to be made from scratch.
Macau differs from many casino Asian spots since it offers an American breakfast menu.
Bally's has steadily upgraded the property acquired from Dover Downs a few years back.
Since acquiring Dover Downs, Bally's has become a national gaming company and gained a potentially lucrative casino franchise in Chicago. Its most ambitious project is a stadium-casino project in Las Vegas that would become the home of the Oakland A's, now playing in Sacramento for a few years.
