A group of former Amtrak employees, including a Clayton resident, have pleaded guilty or face charges in connection with an $11 million healthcare fraud scheme.
Several defendants from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York recently pleaded guilty in the case in U.S. District Court in Newark, NJ. Rodolfo Rivera, 41, of Clayton, pleaded a guilty earlier. Others face charges.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court from January 2019 to June 2022, the men engaged in a scheme to obtain cash kickbacks from healthcare providers in exchange for their agreement to allow their health insurance plans to be billed for services that were never provided and were not medically necessary.
In total, the Amtrak health care plan paid over $11 million in claims associated with providers connected to the scheme.
Each defendant received thousands of dollars in cash kickbacks from providers, including an acupuncturist, physician, and podiatrist, prosecutors stated.
Special agents from the Amtrak Office of Inspector General, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Amtrak Police, and federal money laundering agents assisted in the investigation.
