Delaware City Fire Company and Christiana Fire Company were called to the scene of a derailment on Porter Road in Bear during the Friday morning commute
The fire company reported that 13 tank cars on a Norfolk Southern train that were likely contraining crude oil derailed. No leaks or injuries were reported.
The derailment briefly snarled traffic in the area and led to the brief closing of Route 40. A detour was later posted.
Norfok Southern crews were called to the scene with a large crane arriving on Friday night.
The tank cars have been a common sight in the area near the Delaware City refinery.
AT one point, the refinery built a $100 million unloading area to accept North Dakota crude oil at a iime when pipelines were lacking.
Norfolk Southern also upgraded its trackage in the area.
Rail shhipments have since dropped, although the refinery still receives crude oil via ship and rail.
