Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August 2025 rose to 4.3%, up from 4.1% in July 2025 and now matches the national figure.
The state's jobless rate had been below the U.S. number, although the gap had been narrowing.
The Delaware Department of Labor reported 21,900 unemployed Delawareans in August compared to 18,700 in August 2024.
The nation's unemployment rate was 4.3% in August 2025, up from 4.2% in July 2025. In August 2024, the US unemployment rate was 4.2%, while Delaware’s rate was 3.7%.
In August 2025, the seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment was 493,800, up from 493,000 in July 2025. Since August 2024, Delaware’s total non farm jobs have increased by 3,500, an increase of 0.7%. Nationally, jobs during that period increased by 0.8%.
The Labor Department reported the strongest growth in employment numbers over the past year came in private education and healthcare, with healthcare accounting for about 1,500 new jobs.
Transportation and retail trade added about 1,000 jobs. with leisure and hospitality adding 800 positions and construction up by 400 jobs.
On the minus side, professional and business services and financial services saw the loss of about 1,000 jobs. Construction added 400 jobs.
Sussex County unemployment rate was the lowest in the state at 4.4%. Kent County posted a 5.9% figure and New Castle County came in at 5.3%.
City jobless rates ranged from more than 7% in Wilmington and Dover to 5% in Middletown.
