One of the first things incoming Gov. Matt Meyer should do is send the $150 million upgrade for Legislative Hall back to the drawing board.
A committee has been hashing out plans that call for everything from an underground tunnel to a parking ramp. The laundry list has grown over the years with minimal input from the public and hit and miss media coverage.
Critics have pointed out that $150 million would build several new schools and address other needs in the state. A portion of the upgrade's cost already has funding.
Simply axing the project would make some people happy, but wouldn't solve significant problems.
Meeting space is lacking and the area as currently configured is not suitable for a state with one million people and a $6 billion budget. Moreover, upgrading old buildings is expensive, no matter their size,
The configuration of a building designed for a tiny state will never be ideal.
As one of the 13 colonies, Delaware never aspired to match the marble and granite palaces we see in states like Wisconsin, Texas and even lightly populated Idaho.
At minimum, the tunnel plan should be scrubbed. Other methods exist in enhancing security. It is true that in the current political climate, an unhinged individual could do the unthinkable.
We have seen signs in the past that legislative leadership has become less responsive to individuals other than lobbyists stopping by. It's understandable, but worrisome.
A solution for parking around Leg Hall has been needed for years and should still proceed.
The incoming governor may not get a warm welcome if he wades into the issue.
Meyer has no legislative background and will face more than a few supporters of Bethany Hall-Long, a well-liked lieutenant governor and General Assembly veteran whose backers remain unhappy with the tactics of the county executive's campaign.
Still, the Meyer should pursue the matter early on and develop a common-sense solution. - Doug Rainey, chief content officer.
