Following the proposed plan, Newark-based A-Del Construction, which operates the site, is working to put out the fire by breaking apart piles of mulch, wood debris, stumps and pallets with the use of heavy equipment.
To reduce the heat in the wood products, the department stated that water slurry will be used from an on-site stormwater pond. Given the size and nature of the materials involved, the process will take time, but efforts are ongoing, DNREC reported..
DNREC will work with A-Del to help ensure that the fire is fully extinguished over time and will continue to monitor air quality and respond to public concerns, a release stated.
Middletown Materials, a sand and gravel supplier, also accepts yard waste. The state continues to operate a no-charge yard waste site in the Pike Creek area east of Newark after shutting down other free sites.
The Pike Creek site has generated concerns about fires and invasive plants making their way into an adjacent state park. However, it has continued to operate on weekends, thanks to pressure from the area's legislators
Residentsw and commercial landscapers typically pay a fee to drop off their yard waste or pay extra for a container offered by refuse haulders.
Meanwhile, concerns over air quality has been growing in the wake of an extended sulfur dioxide release at the Delaware City Refining Co.
