The Sussex County Council could revise its strict zoning rules on location of recreational marijuana retail stores and grow sites.
An item on the agenda for the Sept. 9 meeting of the council calls for a discussion and the possible introduction of a revised ordinance.
Gov. Matt Meyer earlier vetoed legislation that would restrict the county's power in setting zoning restrictions for marijuana sites
The legislation came in response to county restrictions that according to critics virtually banned cannabis stores in the county. The current ordinance would make it difficult for the next groups of stores and grow sites approved by the state Marijuana Commissioner to set up shop.
The county restrictions did not affect medical marijuana retailers in the county that are now the only legal source for non-medical marijuana. Those stores are in visible locations including one of the popular outlet malls on Coastal Highway. In his comments on the veto, Meyer suggested that revenue sharing might lessen some of the objections to opening stores.
In addition, many municipalities in Sussex have banned retail marijuana sales, one exception being Seaford.
