Lidl isn't done with its expansion in Delaware.
Regency Centers, owner of the Shoppes at Grayln in north Wilmington is showing the discount grocery store operator as an anchor for the north Wilmington strip center at Marsh and Silverside Roads.
In addition to the Shoppes at Graylyn, Regency, owns the Pike Creek Shopping Center west of Wilmington and has 483 retail properties nationwide.
Lidl is poised to occupy space vacated by Rite Aid, which closed all of its stores earlier this year. The store opening will come in late 2026,
Earlier in the summer, Lidl opened a store off Route 40 in Bear. The store was completed in 2022, but never opened, earning the title of a "zombie Lidl" by DelawareOnline. Lidl had earlier opened stores in Dover and Middletown.
Durng the years the Bear store was vacant, German retailer (pronounced lee del) saw CEOs come and go as it worked on strategies to woo shoppers.
Under the newest CEO, it has put an emphasis on specials via its mobile app, along with its own brand of meat and poultry. The company also shut down a few underperforming stores last year.
The company, which started out building stores from scratch, is now looking at remodeling vacant spaces, such as the former Rite Aid location.
Lidl has resumed its expansion and has been opening stores in Maryland, the New York City metro area and Virginia. Lidl operates a regional distribution center in Perryville, MD.
Lidl shares some similarities with its German rival Aldi, with a middle aisle with a variety of non-grocery merchandise that can include tools, clothes and even sandwich makers. Lidl operates a bakery, but does not have a deli department or store prepare meals.
Aldi now has a dozen stores in all three Delaware counties and has used vacant retail space during its expansion.
