ChristianaCare opening West Grove, PA campus next month

 The site will function as a "neighborhood hospital" with a limited number of beds and without the high overhead costs associated with the former hospital, which was owned by a struggling Pennsylvania healthcare system. 

The site was acquired in 2022, with the hospital system working with stakeholders on service priorities. Emergency care emerged at or near the top of the list.

The work involved an overhaul of the hospital building, including the demolition of interior walls and improvements to the electrical and plumbing systems. The contractor was Wohlsen Construction, which has an office in Delaware and is based in Lancaster, PA.

The site will focus on emergency care, with the ability to send seriously ill patients to ChristianaCare's Newark campus via helicopter or ambulance. ChristianaCare has experience in that area with its site in fast-growing Middletown, DE.

Delaware's largest healthcare system purchased the site amid concerns by residents and emergency services personnel. ChristianaCare already had medical offices in the Jennersville area.

The Jennersville-Landenberg area is home to  older retirees, many of whom worked at DuPont, Hercules, and other Delaware employers.

Ambulance crews face the challenge of transporting ill patients to the nearest hospitals in West Chester and the Newark area.

ChristianaCare has also allied with a national healthcare company to operate two neighborhood hospitals in neighboring Delaware County, PA. It emerged as the high bidder in acquiring outpatient sites from now-defunct Crozer Health.
