Amtrak praised a settlement in a suit with Norfolk Southern over delays when using its tracks.
The freight railroad agreed to do more to ensure that Amtrak trains get priority.
A statement from Amtrak noted that since the case was filed, on-time performance of Amtrak trains using Norfolk Southern's tracks showed measurable improvement.
On the Crescent route alone, NS-related delays are down 34% year-over-year, with Freight Train Interference reduced by 53%. Across all NS-hosted routes, delays decreased 26% and FTI dropped 42% year-over-year. Ridership on these routes also rose by 2%, reflecting growing customer confidence in service reliability.
The Crescent stops in Wimington on a route that runs between New York and New Orleans.
“Amtrak appreciates NS’s concrete steps to improve performance under its DOJ agreement. We remain committed to working together to deliver a better experience for our passengers," the statement concluded.
Amtrak has struggled with on-time performance, due in part to long freight trains, limited passing sidings and other issues. Also, Amtrak operates aging equipment that is prone to breakdowns.
On-time performance is better on its Northeast Corridor that includes stops in Wilmington and Newark. That route is controlled by Amtrak.
Despite, the above issues, passenger traffic on Amtrak routes has been on the rise. One example is strong traffic on a new route between Chicago and Minneapolis.
Amtrak has maintenance, office, dispatching, training and other activities in northern Delaware and employed about 1,600 in its 2024 fiscal year.
