The Delaware Department of Transportation will close so rebuilding of two bridges can get underway. The bridges are on Route 13 over Blackbird Creek.
On Monday, Sept. 8, northbound lanes will close to traffic beginning at 12 a.m. and will remain closed for 45 days. To avoid the area motorists can turn left onto Route 1 at on ramp to Route 1 North in Smyrna, continue north on Route 1 for 10 miles, exit Route 1 right at exit 136 in Odessa, turn right onto Route 299 (Middletown Odessa Rd), turn left onto Route 13 and continue north.
On Monday, Sept. 15 the southbound lanes will closed to traffic beginning at 12 a.m and will remain closed for 45 days. To avoid the area, motorists can turn right onto Route 299 (Middletown Odessa Rd), turn left onto Route 1 at the ramp to Route 1 south in Odessa, continue south on Route 1 for 10 miles, exit Route 1 right at the exit 119B in Smyrna, turn left onto US 13 and continue south.
The above routes allow motorists to avoid tolls. Motorists can take Route 1 around the bridge and pay tolls.
The bridge is listed as being the most structurally deficient in the state. The concrete arch is deteriorated and has spalling, cracks, and corrosion of exposed bar reinforcement. Scouring has taken place.
Phase 1 of the project has been completed, clearing the way for the replacement of both bridges.
The bridge work is weather dependent. Further information is available at www.deldot.gov or on WTMC-AM 1380.
