The Delaware Coalition for Open Government last week sent a letter to the Office of Inspector General at the US Department of Labor that seeks an investigation into actions in a recent criminal case.
The request comes in the wake of the department's actions following an embezzlement case that totaled $181,000.
The individual linked to the embezzlement took his own life and the department never released information about the case until contacted by WHYY.
In a related matter, the Delaware Auditor's office issued a report saying the department's records were inauditable, but made no mention of the theft case.
In a letter, the Labor Department claimed its actions were proper and blamed the media for distorting the situation.
The letter listed DelCOG's concerns, while requesting the US Department of Labor to oversee the state's embezzlement investigation.
Findings of the state investigation will be released to members of the Delaware General Assembly, although there is some question as to whether the report will be released to the public. (See related story)
DELCOG and some legislators have called for the state to have its own independent inspector general. However, the bill has never moved forward, due to concerns that the office would duplicate the work of other agencies and would be costly.
