The price of regular grade gas in Delaware fell below $3 a gallon on Thursday, and continued to drop during the weekend, AAA reported.
A gradual drop in the price at the pump recently picked up speed with the price of regular fuel down nine cents from last week and about 20 cents from a year ago. The national average price is $3.14 a gallon.
Several stations in northern New Castle County were selling regular at $2.80 a gallon or less.
Gas prices could go up again, due to international tensions, refinery outages, and hurricane activity near the Gulf Coast, the site of much of the nation's refining capacity.
Factors holding down prices include refineries moving to cheaper winter gasoline bends, stepped up oil production worldwide by OPEC+ and other nations, and the end of summer travel season.
There is room for a further reduction, with price leaders Wawa, Royal Farms and branded stations (Shell, ExxonMobil, etc.) selling regular slightly below $3 a gallon. Independent stations and the Costco and BJ's membership clubs typically sell regular at prices below those of the two convenience store chains.
The price of crude oil closed at $60.69 on Friday.
