Residents on the northeast edge of Delaware are reporting odors after a power failure at a nearby refinery.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control reported that Pennsylvania authorities have reported that the Monroe Energy refinery experienced a power loss between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m., prompting an emergency shutdown of refinery units and visible smoke from a flare.
Power has since been restored and the flare ended at 7:40 a.m.
According to a release, air samples were taken by Monroe in Delaware and showed that air quality was found found to meet health standards.
Local fire companies that have been responding in the area have recommended residents with respiratory concerns stay indoors and turn off air conditioners while odors dissipate.
Monroe Energy is a unit of Delta Airlines and produces jet fuel.
Earlier this year, the Delaware City Refining Co. reported extended sulfur dioxide emissions, due to an equipment failure that required lengthy and difficult repairs.
The emission levels were below fedeal standards that would raise health concerns.
Those releases did not result in complaints about odors. Residents have raised concerns about the lack of early disclosure of the releases.
