Avelo Airlines is adding additional fall nonstop flights between Wilmington Airport and Orlando. In addition to the additional Florida flights, Avelo is resuming seasonal service to San Juan, Puerto Rico beginning Oct, 1.
Flights to Orlando continue to attract passengers flying out of the Delaware airport, despite Spirit, Frontier, American and Southwest all offering service to the theme park mecca.
Spirit and Frontier offer fares comparable to those of Avelo. However, Avelo says the convenience of the Wilmington Airport gives the small airline an edge. Spirit and Frontier also rank low in customer satisfaction ratings.
American Airlines is also a competitor on some flights. The nation's largest airline offers ticketing and screening services at Wilmington Airport, with passengers riding to Philadelphia International Airport via Landline motor coach.
Beginning Oct. 1, Avelo will double its Orlando flights to four times weekly with the addition of Wednesday and Saturday service joining Monday and Friday flights. The airline has typically offered three-day-a-week flights but trimmed back its September schedule as school resumed.
After taking a seasonal break in September, Avelo returns its nonstop service to San Juan on October 1 with twice weekly service on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with additional service around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Avelo's schedule had previously listed flights pausing in both September and October.
“At Avelo Airlines, our goal is to Inspire Travel. We do this by saving our customers time and money so they can travel more," said airline founder Andrew Levy. "These additional flights, coupled with our everyday low fares and industry-leading reliability, will inspire our Customers to fly even more this fall. These additional flights reflect the strong demand we are seeing across existing, and the new destinations Avelo serves from ILG.”
Reports filed with the federal government have indicated that Wilmington has emerged as one of Avelo's better performing destinations on the East Coast.
The airline is shifting operations away from the West Coast, due to low passenger demand and according to some pushback from a decision to operate charter service for ICE immigration enforcement flights.
Avelo has denied those claims and said weakness in the West Coast was an issue before the launch of ICE Air flights.
Wilmington Airport saw protests outside its entrance earlier this year, with the governor indicating he was canceling a leisure trip to San Juan. However, the response from state and local government has been muted. That has not been the case in New Haven, CT, its largest base
Avelo will move a trio of Boeing 737 jets to the East Coast with the end of western flights. Wilmington Airport officials hope one jet joins the other two Boeings based in Delaware.
