Wonder partners with celebrity chefs, including Bobby Flay, Michael Symon and Marcus Samuelson to offer dishes for delivery or carryout. Wonder operates what it calls "A New Kind of Food Hall" with dishes prepared from the recipes of the above chefs and others.
The company has been fueled with private equity funding and last year acquired the Grubhub delivery service for $650 million. Grubhub delivers menu items from independent and chain restaurants.
Wonder has moved out of New York City with brick and mortar stores and now has locations in the Delaware Valley.
The newest location is in The Grove mixed use center, formerly College Square on the east edge of Newark. The location is adjacent to the apartment complex at the mixed-use center.
Wonder if the brainchild of Marc Lore, an online entrepreneur who has launched and sold companies and is listing as having a net worth of $2.8 billion.
Wonder is part of a trend toward companies offering ready-to-eat meals sometimes with higher price tags. The Wonder website lists steaks from Bobby Flay priced in the fine dining category.
Wonder also appears to incorporates elements of "ghost kitchens" that became popular during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A representative for the company said that comparison is not accurate, since unlike ghost kitchens, Wonder controls every step of the process from preparation to the kitchen itself and delivery system. Ghost kitchens typically used an existing restaurant in preparing food.
In 2021, a story on Food Network host Guy Fieri's Flavortown ghost kitchens was the most viewed post on Delaware Business Now. The website has since moved toward Fieri's chicken sandwich chain.
Wonder currently operates 52 locations. See fact sheet for further details.
